The Top Three Decorating Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
After working as a professional interior designer for over 25 years, I have noticed some common mistakes people make when decorating their homes. Here are my top three decorating mistakes AND how to avoid making them in YOUR home…
1. Too many “little” accessories-
Using lots of small accessories will make your space look cluttered and crowded. Most professional decorators and stylists use fewer but larger decorative items which have more impact and make your rooms appear larger and more open.
2. Wrong scale Furniture/Art/Accessories-
Many people have homes filled with furniture, art, and accessories that are just not the right size or scale for their rooms. Take a good look at your spaces to see if your furnishings look too large or too small for a space. Always take measurements of your rooms before shopping to be sure you are purchasing the right size items!
3. Too Much Clutter-
I find many rooms are simply overwhelmed with clutter on all the various surfaces- decluttering your rooms will make them look cleaner, larger and so much more attractive, not to mention you will feel more relaxed living in your home! Bonus- decluttering is FREE!
One easy way to see if you have made any of these mistakes in your home is to photograph your rooms (with the camera on your phone) and take a fresh look at your spaces. Often we become “blind” to our home decor because we live in our homes every day- photographing your rooms will give you a new perspective on your decor and possibly bring to light any issues you may have.
