DIY Stencil Project... -

OK, so my blog is not known for being a "do-it-yourself" blog…and I'm really not much of a "do-it yourself" gal…but every once in a while I get a "wild hair" and decide to try something. Soooo, I have always loved the look of really large-scale damask prints on walls, draperies and pillows and always thought I could re-create the look, so I decided to pick up a large sheet of stencil material and… (gasp) do it myself!!!

I found a pattern I liked in a fabric book of mine, kind of a contemporary damask style design, and to save time (an effort) I only traced and cut out HALF the stencil, it can be "flipped" and matched up to create a perfect mirrored image.

Step one: Trace your pattern

Step 2- Cut out the pattern with an Exacto Knife (this step sounds easy, but this took a REALLY long time…curves are hard, but I persevered and did my best).

Step 3- Position stencil on fabric or wall- (I used a piece of scrap burlap for my "test" fabric)

Step 4- Apply paint (for walls, use regular wall paint, for fabrics, use a fabric paint)

Step 5- After the first half of the image has dried, flip the stencil over and position it to match up on the mirrored side…then apply paint-

I love that it doesn't have to be "perfect" and I love how the paint was a little "distressed" on the burlap…areas that were darker and lighter than others

This was such a fun little project, and now that I have my stencil, I can use it on walls, fabrics for draperies and pillows…there are so many great ideas…so stay tuned for more "stencil" projects!
