4 Steps to a Luxe Layered Bed
Personal question: Do you make your bed every day?
I happen to think there are two kinds of people in this world- those who make their beds every day and those who don’t! (No judgment here- neither person is better than the other- it’s totally your personal preference;)
As you may have guessed, I am a bed-maker… I feel literally compelled to make it every day and my day somehow feels “off” if I don’t- LOL! So after years of decorating and making clients’ beds (and my own), I have come up with a simple 4 step formula for creating a luxe, layered bed- here’s how I do it:
Step 1- Start with high-Quality White Sheets-
I recommend buying high-quality sheets and sleeping pillows- pay attention to things like thread count and materials and purchase the best you can afford- a great set of sheets will last longer and feel fabulous on your skin at night! I like white sheets because they are easy to bleach and they will give your bed that high-end resort hotel look!
Step 2- Add a Neutral Coverlet and Euro Shams
I always use a lightweight, neutral coverlet/quilt and matching Euro shams on all my beds- these will give your bed a beautiful base for any color or pattern you may want to add in the next step. Also, it’s nice to have a thinner layer to help stay cool on those warmer nights!
Step 3- Layer on a Duvet, Duvet Cover And Shams
After creating a beautiful neutral base with high-quality sheets and a lightweight, neutral coverlet and Euro shams I love to add a duvet and duvet cover folded at the foot of the bed with matching shams in front of the Euro shams. This is a great place to have fun adding color, pattern, or texture to your bed. (in this post I kept the bed all-white with a gorgeous flax linen duvet cover and shams for a little texture).
Step 4- Add an accent pillow and throw
Because I can’t leave well enough alone, and I love a gorgeous layered look, I always add a beautiful accent pillow or two in the center of the bed (these are smaller in size, 18″ sq or lumbar) and a luxe throw blanket for those occasional naps when you don’t want to mess up your bed! **Throw blankets also come in handy if you have pets or little ones who love to jump on the bed- they will protect some of your other bedding!
I hope you found this post helpful, to summarize, here is my checklist for a beautifully layered bed:
- high-quality sheet set and sleeping pillows
- neutral, lightweight coverlet or quilt and matching Euro shams+inserts (2- queen/ 3-king)
- neutral dust skirt (if needed)
- duvet cover+insert with matching shams+inserts (2- standards or 2 kings)
- accent pillow (18″ sq or lumbar)
- accent throw blanket
